Silent Auction

Half of the proceeds from the Silen Auction will help offset costs of the Institute and the other half will be donated in the name of the Rotarian who donated the item sold. Not only will the Rotarian get credit for the donation, including Paul Harris Fellow credit, but the donation will also count toward their club and District contributions for the Gates Challenge Grant.

We need your help to ensure we will have a great auction. We are asking past, current, and future Governors in Zones 33 and 34 to consider donating items for the auction. Items can include gift certificates, hotel or timeshare stays, prints, paintings, books, jewelry, wine, electronics, round of golf, etc. Below are some of the items that have already been donated:

Weekend for two at the Homestead
Golf for two of the Homestead
Carriage ride at the Homestead
Helicopter tour over Williamsburg
Timeshare in Shenandoah Valley, VA
Timeshare in the Bahamas
Vacation package to St. Croix
Pat Buckley Moss framed Rotary print

If you have an item to donate to the silent auction, please contact Bill Pollard (757-242-2012).

General Information about the Institute

Modified American plan

Our room rates are based on the Modified American Meal Plan. That means that your breakfasts and dinners are included in your room rate and is applicable at all restaurant outlets. There is an upcharge of $35 for dining in the 1766 Grille. Room service is also included in the meal plan, but is subject to a delivery charge of $5 per person. Unless your class is dining at the 1766 Grille, you will incur no additional charge for the class dinner this year.

Airport information

The airport in Roanoke, VA, is closest to The Homestead but is still nearly an hour and a half away by car. Most flights will arrive in the early afternoon, making it difficult to arrive in time to get to any of the sessions that begin at 3:00 or 3:30. You may choose to come a day early and either stay at a hotel in Roanoke or enjoy an extra night at the beautiful Homestead. Airport transportation will be available for $45 per person, each way. If you want airport transportation, check the box on the registration form. You will be contacted with details closer to the event, and the cost will be billed to your room.

Other airport options are Dulles in Washington, DC, a three-and-a-half hour drive away; and Lynchburg, VA, about two hours away. Renting a car is the best way to get from either of these airports to The Homestead.

Scotch Tasting

Ron Napier (7570) has been conducting single malt scotch tastings for more than 10 years. The Saturday afternoon tasting of five different single malts will teach you how single malts are made, how they are different from blended scotches, and how they vary from region to region. Become a single malt scotch connoisseur. At $35 per person, this tasting is a tremendous bargain. Limit 60.
